Moon house and lake

Moon by the Lake Limmaren

This image was captured at full moon on August 11, 2022. The lake is Limmaren by our house, and I took the boat to a shore nearby to get an interesting foreground accompanying the moon. I used the Nikon D500 and Tamron lens 150-600@330, ISO 250, exposure 1/13 sec, f 13 for this image.

To plan a moon shot I normally use the PhotoPills app. In the moon calendar of this app I can see when the next full moon will occur. Then I choose a location with an interesting foreground and put markers in the map of the foreground object (for example a building or mountain) and the assumed photography position, see below. At the photography position the foreground object and the moon must be clearly visible. When I arrive at the photography location I can simulate the photography session by using the augmented reality function (AR) in the app.

PhotoPill overview of Lidingö and Kaknästornet

On Sunday 30th of July 2023 at approximately 10 pm the full moon was 66 meters above the horizon and close to Kaknästornet. The photography location chosen was Lidingö 2.8 kilometers away with a clear view of Kaknästornet and the moon. At this distance the moon had an apparent size of 26.4 meters in the camera. All of this information could be calculated in advance.

Augmented reality showing Moon rise at photographic location

Augmented reality view in the PhotoPills app showing an almost full moon rising at Limmaren around 6.30 pm on September 29, 2023. With this helpful function you can precisely plan the picture before the actual capture.

My astro companion Myra waiting patiently for the moon to rise at our photography location in Lidingö. Unfortunately low clouds ruined the night so we had to head home empty-handed.
